Trendy Trash

It seems that every season, I see something in the pages of magazines that make me stop and say, "Why the *bleep* is this in fashion right now?!"

Here are the trends that are hot for Summer that just make me cringe.

Neon Everything

I'm SOOO over this trend! It seems like it's been "cute" to wear neon since I was a junior in high school. Okay, it might be fun to wear to a high school dance (see extremely embarassing and unflattering picture below), but that's it! Let neon stay where it belongs: on Lisa Frank notebooks and lights in cheesy night clubs. Despite how many articles I see about "How to Wear Neon in the Workplace," I don't think it will ever be acceptable for anyone to wear a hot pink dress with neon orange heels to work. Instead, try mixing pops of color on accesories with staple pieces in conservative shades.

Feather Earrings

Oh, feather earrings. Let me count the ways in which I despise thee. First of all, whether the feathers are real or fake, it will never be cute to sport a bird's pirmary mode of transportation on your ears. Secondly, feathers can go very wrong very fast. Recently, I saw one student designer's collection that included a feathered earring that trailed down to the poor model's navel. Needless to say, I am not a fan. One reason for this trend cropping up is that they're supposed to be the "hot new thing" in Hollywood. In my opinion, this is one trend that doesn't even look good on celebrities.

Mullet Dresses

I blame my mother for my hatred of this trend. This one is so hot lately. And the thing that stinks about it the most is that it's everywhere and it's inexpensive to pull off, so everyone is trying it. I will admit, there IS A WAY to successfully pull off a mullet dress. However, most women don't do it correctly. A mullet dress is all about proportions. Never under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES should it be worn with flats or clunky espadrilles (for some reason, the women I see always think these are perfect pairings). Wear a sleek mullet dress in a rich solid colored fabric with a clean, skinny, sandalled heel.

Plum Lipstick

Does it really look good on anyone? This trend is sooo hard for the average woman to pull off. Number one because, much like red lipstick, it's hard to apply so that it will stay and look correct. Number two, because it doesn't really go with anything. You're going to have a really tough time pulling off an outfit that won't be upstaged by your face (unless wearing all white or black is your thing). The main reason I don't like this trend is that the deep color on your lips makes you look dead, especially if you have pale skin. I leave you with this question: in ten years, do you really want to look back at a picture of yourself now and think, "Why do I look like a zombie?"

  1. I've seen multiple girls wearing plum lipstick, mostly in colder months but they all rocked it and had varying hair and skin tones. Megan Fox probably pulled off the look too but readers would never know because we cant see the whole look, just her face. Next time, I'd like to see the entire package before I judge the trend.

    1. Hey, Anonymous! Thanks for your constructive criticism! I'm sure you're probably right that it looks good with certain outfits, but as a trend overall, I just haven't liked plum lipstick when I've ever seen it on the red carpet or on street style. Hey, you know what they say; one man's trash is another man's treasure!
