My favorite band, Art Brut, is more alternative than alternative. They are not your typical alt-pop band that can crossover to radio pop. They're real, they're catchy, and their lyrics click with fans on first listen. They're unique, they're different, they aren't easily put in a box.
The UK-based band is unique because of their syncopated melody lines and the fact that their lead singer is more of a toned-speaker than a vocalist. You'd think that syncopation and rhythmic speaking would sound more like a poorly planned poetry cypher, but the results are truly captivating. The band's lyrics are kitschy, funny, and at times poignant.
I started listening to Art Brut during my freshman year of high school. Since then, my love and appreciation for the band has only grown. I even once had a nightmare that I missed an opportunity to meet the band. This band has gotten me through many, many hours of fiction writing, and has also helped me sort through a bad break-up or two. Although over the years, I've accumulated a few others favorites (like Phoenix and Local Natives), Art Brut will always be my quintessential favorite band of all time.
Here are some of my favorite of lead singer Eddie Argos' moody lyrics:
- I know I shouldn't, and its possibly wrong/to break from your kiss to turn up a pop song.
- All my friends think I'm insane/I'm still in love with Emily Kane.
- People in love lie around and get fat/I didn't want us to end up like that.
- These songs wont see the sun anytime soon/under the cover of headphones/and for the privacy of bedrooms.
- Life is especially hard/when no one trusts you with a credit card.
- I can't remember/anything I've done/I fought the floor and the floor won!
- They say "I've got so much money to spend"/all I can afford is a bad weekend.
- Move around like your shoes don't fit/get on the dancefloor/it's a direct hit
