Talking Points and Top-Handle Bags
As you all may or may not know, I have a full-time fellowship on Capitol Hill. The women's fashion on the Hill varies GREATLY. Some ladies play it super conservative in their perfectly tailored pinstriped suits and white buttondowns. Others wear a slightly more lax but still extremely traditional combination from Ann Taylor (a clever Washington Post fashion reporter once called the store "Garanimals for adults"). Still, some (usually younger) women look like they have just stepped out of a fashion blog; complete with their printed flats, tailored pieces in bright hues, smart accessories, and perfect sock buns.
Despite their varying choice of apparel, one constant remains; the Washington woman loves a good structured bag.
It seems like I see the same three bags as I watch the women scurrying beside me up and down the Hill.
The Michael Kors Hamilton bag is wildly popular. I think it's desirable because of the abundant space it provides (for toting talking points and gym clothes) and the quality of the leather.
If one designer rules Capitol Hill, it's definitely Ms. Spade. Most women that I see are wearing Kate Spade bags. No matter the size, color, or shape, it seems like Kate Spade just knows what Washington women want, and they're willing to pay for it.
And, ah, the Longchamp bag. If you ask a friend that's spent a considerable amount of time with me, they'll tell you that I often rant about how much I despise the Longchamp bag. I just don't understand it. Why would anyone in their right mind spend $200 on a miniscule piece of leather and a big sheet of nylon/canvas? Ridiculous. They look like lunchboxes to me, anyways. Whatever their appeal is, the women of Capital Hill find that these bags suit their needs as they make their journey to work each day.
What is the bag of choice for women where you work? Do you love your Longchamp? Tell me why! Leave me a comment below!

I don't understand the Longchamp either! Everyone seems to get one just to "join the club" or something.
